Houses in Astrology: What Each of the 12 Houses Rules

Here's a riddle: two people born on the same day. Both have Sun in Taurus, Moon in Scorpio, Venus in Aries. But one is a businessman and the other is an artist. How?

The answer is houses. Planets in the same signs but different houses manifest completely differently. Sun in Taurus in the 10th house (career) is a determined entrepreneur. The same Sun in the 5th house (creativity) is an artist who loves the process.

Houses are calculated based on exact time and place of birth. This is why birth time is so important - without it, you don't know your houses, and that's roughly half the chart's information.

1st House - You (Ascendant)

The first house is you. Your appearance, first impression you make, your approach to life. The cusp of the first house IS your Ascendant. Planets in the 1st house strongly influence your personality and how others see you.

4th House - Home and Family (IC)

Your roots, family, home environment, parental home. This house shows where you came from and what "home" means to you. Also connected to one parent (usually the mother) and the later years of life.

5th House - Creativity and Pleasure

One of the most pleasant houses! Romance (early stages), creativity, children, hobbies, entertainment, gambling. Everything that brings joy and allows self-expression.

6th House - Work and Health

Don't confuse with career (that's the 10th house). The 6th house is daily work, routine, duties. Also health, habits, and attitude toward your own body. Many planets here means you're a person of routine.

7th House - Partnership (Descendant)

The house opposite the 1st. If the 1st is "me," the 7th is "others." Marriage, business partnerships, significant relationships. The sign on the 7th house cusp shows what partner you subconsciously seek.

8th House - Transformation and Depths

The most mysterious house. Other people's money, inheritance, taxes, loans - this is about others' resources. But also: sex, death, rebirth, deep psychological processes. Planets in the 8th house give an intense life.

9th House - The Big World

Long-distance travel, higher education, philosophy, religion, foreign cultures. This house expands your horizons. Many planets here? The world beyond the familiar calls to you.

10th House - Career and Reputation (MC)

One of the most important houses. Your career, social standing, reputation, life achievements. The 10th house cusp (Midheaven, MC) shows your "mission" in society. Planets here are the central theme of your professional life.

11th House - Friends and Dreams

Your social circle, friends, like-minded people, group activities. Also: hopes, dreams, and future goals. Planets in the 11th house show what kind of friends you attract and what your role in groups is.

12th House - The Hidden World

The most mystical house. Subconscious, hidden fears, karmic debts, spirituality, isolation. Planets here work "behind the scenes" - you may not be aware of them, but they powerfully influence your life. Also: secret enemies, hospitals, solitude.

Everyone has empty houses - there are only 10 planets and 12 houses. It doesn't mean that life area is empty or unimportant!

An empty house simply means there's no special emphasis on that theme. It manifests through the sign on the house cusp and the position of its ruler. For example, if the 7th house is empty but has Libra on its cusp, and Venus (Libra's ruler) is in the 2nd house - partnership will be connected to finances and values.
